Susan Knight
Susan Knight has exhibited her work over the past 15 years whilst juggling family and a teaching career. Eclectic is the best way to describe Knight’s work. The ideas and style have developed from a broad range of sources and diverse materials.
Her work has always been conceived and produced both in the studio and the home. Domestic objects, patterned papers, quilts, postcards, old photographs and flora from the garden have at times influenced her output. A great deal of her work is fragmented and lends itself to multiple forms of construction and tessellation, suggesting a connection to building blocks, puzzles and the cuisenaire set.
The daughter of a Melbourne based architect and partner to an architect turned photographer, not surprisingly Knight has always enjoyed a great appreciation of architecture and interior design. This interest has led to the realisation of the Room Series; an on-going collaborative project that investigates the nature and function of specific domestic spaces and the objects located in these interiors.
The inter-connection between art and life has found form in Knight’s re-kindled interest in Equus and the art of dressage. Like the artist the equestrian is concerned with the principles of composition. Balance, rhythm and unity have become her mantra in both the arena and the studio. This most recent preoccupation is fuelling new work.

Equus
The horse bit is an object of utility and beauty. The design and aesthetic describe an on going dialogue between equus and equestrian. In these images the joints, rings and shanks create enigmatic forms that allude to an arcane language.

Mantle
Mantle is an on going collaborative project that documents the mantelpiece in Australian living rooms. The living room is a place for private contemplation but also the most public domestic space.
Pattern and Rhythm
Craft based printing techniques and an antique book press allow the artist to create a whimsical museum of nature and design. Plant specimens are collected, painted, pressed and re-configured onto paper and timber rhomboids. Old envelopes, scraps of wallpaper, botanical prints and mirrored tags are shaped in order to construct new spatial relationships.
