Wendy Stavrianos
‘Room of landscape memory and Desire.’ 2011.
I am always trying to reconcile opposites. This is a dialogue between what is seen, closely observed and experienced and what is felt through the senses and the deeper intuitive recesses of the poetic imagination.
I have become the ‘gatherer’ of images of the real and the imagined landscape, on journey’s from Central Australia, Darwin, South Coast of NSW, and Central Victoria where I live and work. These landscapes have become memories strung out across time and space like precious beads on a string. They are joined to the internal landscape that we carry within us. The dualities of inner, outer, dark, light, night and day, are forces in an endless dance, which I hope to resolve.
Auden, the poet said, “If you have an unwritten poem inside you and you don’t write it, you will cry tears of shame”. These paintings are my unwritten poem that were stored in the ‘forgotten rooms of the mind’, gathering dust. It is from these childhood rooms that we make the poem within us. My journey has been to value the invisible reality; part of the deeper world, the Metaphysical .
The ‘Room’ is read like the poem is read. So also is the musical score set in a particular key, as a painting is tonally set in place by an unavoidable subjectivity.
This room of intimacy is a world in itself; a space that can hypnotize us with its memories and with its deeper desires. We gather into the space of the canvas, what has touched and beguiled us, or sustained our creative life through time.
