Einstein speaks of space and time as born from the same essence. In my understanding space is time manifest, whether it is the perspectival space within a painting, the individual’s own unique mindspace or the physical space we inhabit in the world around us.
My art navigates its course through this concept/hypothesis on many levels; the process involved in making, the mediums used and the role the viewer plays in the experiencing of the piece itself.
The process is both contemplative and integral to the piece. I sit, and wait, and listen and am guided by the sensuality of the mediums whether papers made by hand, Japanese inks, particles of millions of year old black coal, silken thread from China, French pigments or gold leaf. These materials become a starting point from which to begin the journey of the painting.
Coupled with this process of making, is ongoing research into Eastern philosophy, Western sacred traditions, poetry and quantum physics; the bedrock for the conceptual element of my practice.
A recent move into the field of video projection installation allows me to explore the space in which we position ourselves in the world in a different way. The works on paper and linen are phenomenological in essence; they are to be experienced, to be felt. The projection installations allow me to extend and expand upon this to create a more deeply immersive experience.
I believe that by venturing into the deeper levels of our own beings, we are able to touch the universal; Jung’s archetypal and collective unconscious, an holonic universe. From here the viewer is invited to create their own dialogue with the works, in their unique way and, I hope is also touched by the mystery from whence it was created.
