Jan Hogan
Jan Hogan is a practicing artist and academic currently living and working in Tasmania. Her art practice is interwoven with daily life exploring concepts of belonging and dispossession. She works in situ in the environment, on sites allocated as a commons. At present it is Truganini Reserve on Mt Nelson in the suburb of Taroona. However, for many years it was Gundaroo Common in NSW and other sites have been Mirima National Park in the Kimberley, WA, Mutitjulu, in Central Australia and Casuarina Beach in Darwin. Her work is a dialogue with the land and its people, searching for a way that difference can occupy the same space. After living in many remote areas of Australia she became interested in conceptions of time, materiality and place and whether it is possible to have a cross-cultural dialogue through the Visual Arts. This is the core of her research, art practice and teaching.
ARTISTS STATEMENT
Truganini track is a fold in a mountain range, starting at a creek; it traverses a gully emerging at an old Signal Station. Ancient stories are embedded in the land, the geology revealing massive events and changes in climate, interweaved with colonial history and the everyday. On the track is a bounded realm, a canopy of trees and ferns enfolding the body, with the creek trickling by the side, and escarpments and overhangs to be negotiated. The breath of the previous day is often not yet released making a eucalyptus infused vapour cocoon around the track. Fresh animal tracks slide beneath the bushes and birds flutter just out view, detritus of floods are suspended in trees above my head, entangled with cobwebs and fresh leaf falls. I am working to articulate the presence of this track, its participation in this world rather than represent it as though we stand outside of and not really a part of this world. Paper acts as a membrane between events of the past and current events bringing forward possibilities for the future. Washed, ironed and folded I explore my feelings for this land in my cultural language of caring.
