Anna Caione
My work is inspired by my collection of travel mementos I have gathered on my journeys to Italy. I address the shifting landscape of experience and recollection.
I dabble with my contemporary culture and my past heritage, which in some ways may be understood as a threshold between realms – The notion of both the intangible realms of memory and the physical realms of place.
My practice is concerned with subjective understandings of matter and space; the energies inherent in materials; with vitality and memory. My art works may reference old historical surfaces, ancient structures, architecture, landscape and yet carry a sense of history through the application of found objects, materials and the trace of the artist’s touch.
I collect found objects, materials and fabrics to recall the emotions associated with a particular nostalgic experience I may have had in Italy or I associate with Italy. I am interested in the poetics of remembrance, history and nostalgia;
The ‘fabric’ is of something; a house, a memory, a culture is a weave, an experience. What is of interest to me is the collected found object or fabric and the process they have undergone to arrive at a gradual and imperceptible change achieved by the natural ware and usage of these.
Of particular interest to me are the layered and tactile surfaces I attempt to achieve during the creative process.
The artworks tactile surfaces are an attempt to create a play of opposing forces.
I am involved in the physical and emotional encounter I have with the objects I collect. Gestures such as cutting, layering, sewing, wrapping, tying and placement form part of the work. I aim to layer together various materials and mediums as if unearthed and to resurrect these into transcendental artworks.
