Jan Davis, Big Garden
Aug 9 - Sep 6 2014, Opening Saturday August 9th 2-4pm
Jan Davis’ exhibition Big Garden makes explicit her negotiated relationship with the landscape. It is, she acknowledges, a ‘light engagement’ based on her own experience, but one that is not unfamiliar. Davis proposes in Big Garden, that we see the landscape with our bodies, not just our eyes. She seeks an authentic tactile experience that does more than describe the landscape, but alludes to it. Each aspect of the work is a response by the artist to the land and stimulates the garden/foreground and mountains/background as experienced both at her home and to a certain extent Lismore, ringed as it is by hills.

2014
An exhibition addressing notions of place and belonging played out in a particular garden, whilst also alluding to the Gaelic origin of the name Lismore. Big Garden consists of drawings and digital prints installed with found objects collected from the garden and native grasses grown specifically for the project. The centrepiece of the installation is a timber viewing platform which mimics constructions found in some national parks but also contains echoes of a verandah. The exhibition speaks of a complex, personal engagement with the local environment.
