Sophia Errey Wunderkammer: Licht-Alberich/Schwarz-Alberich
Sep 13 - Oct 11 2014, Exhibition opening event; Saturday September 13th, 2-4pm
The early modern Wunderkammer, writes Benjamin Breen, stood at the intersection of a preoccupation with internal psychology (the microcosmos) and the exotic, rare, rich or unfamiliar (the cosmos), as, while displaying objects from the world, it also revealed the collector’s mental life.
Richard Wagner’s Ring cycle has frequently been understood as uniting outer events on a cosmic scale with the inner events of the characters. My image of a Wunderkammer springs from my experiences as a Volunteer Extra for the Melbourne 2013 production of Der Ring des Nibelungen.
