Richard Collins 'Port Melbourne Paintings'
August 15 - 24th
This exhibition shows work from a year of weekly excursions with an artist friend to paint at Port Melbourne, which offers a vast and variously lit stage of bay and sky upon which the maritime behemoths of global trade come and go, as massive floating sculptures. The plein air oils, watercolours and monoprints are my attempts to accomplish the traditional aim of such painting: to capture that day’s particular light, colour and mood. This is always a challenge because often you get four seasons in an hour, let alone a day.
In the larger studio painting I adopted a more abstract idiom to fuse memories of multiple painting sessions with a feeling for the structure of the location, dominated as it is by strong horizontals. In both the plein air and the studio work I am trying to make strong compositions that will express both my feeling for the motif, and for the qualities of the particular medium. |

'...can it just be between you and me?'
Aug 01st - 12th
This painting installation explores the role of semantics, pragmatics and semiotics as part of a broader investigation into the hierarchy of values present in the systems and structures surrounding language and signs.
With so much noise in the world perhaps it’s time to hear what we see. But if so… can it just be between you and me? |
Deanna Hitti 'The Green Line'
July 18th - 27th
The Green Line is part of a series of works referencing the Australian $100 note, overlayed with subtle and harmonious arabic typography. The work provides a platform to discuss the long history of unrealistic representations of Middle Eastern customs and beliefs we have come to learn through art, literature, music, film, television and advertising.

Mandy Gunn 'Patterns of Speech'
May 23rd - June 01st
Mandy Gunn has been been working with recycled paper and Text for many years, mostly the sort that is discarded in the bin once it has been used -tram tickets, telephone books, catalogues, advertising, wrapping material, office left overs and so on. To this she has added recycled books, generally well known classics and frequently used books such as dictionaries.
In Patterns of Speech, she has chosen 6 of the best known plays, collaged them on to cardboard and reconstructed them in 3D repeating patterns reminiscent of sound waves.
Mandy trained at the College of the Arts where she completed a Master’s degree in 2000 and has shown extensively in galleries around Australia as well as being involved with outdoor environmental sculpture events such as The Floating Land at Noosa and Palimpsest at Mildura.
